Last year a number of mysterious "pip" stations were reported; mainly from the Far East. Takashi and the Japan Utility Monitor both have reported a couple of these pip stations for the first time since months. They are possibly of Russian origin. Clues anyone???
2-second pip station can be heard on 3115, 5455, 8340, 10470 and 14425 kHz. 8340 kHz is on the air 24 hrs a day. The transmissions on 10470//14425 kHz start around 2300 UTC and sign off around 1030 UTC. 3115//5455 kHz start at ca. 1030 UTC and sign off at ca. 2300 UTC. Occasional "messages" are being sent, consisting of the letter of "Z", inverted "Z" (..--) or (----). Both are Cyrillic letters.
| See also Newsletter 71 for more about pip stations. |
The Iranian "tick" was heard on 14000 and 21000 kHz by Wolf. (See also N&O #69).
Another oddity as reported by Takashi and Tomonori: an unid station transmitted a "2" every 30 secs on 10140.5 kHz in CW at 0822 UTC on 28 February.
