The Pip on 8340 kHz

The Pip on 8340 has been reported throughout the month. The signal seems to be better in S. America (Brazil and Argentina) than here in Europe.

Going through a number of samples, real time listening and reports, I am pretty sure that some of the morse activity is related to the 2-second pip. There are morse stations next to 8340 as well, but they are not related.

One of the most convincing samples came from Tony. You can clearly hear that the pips make place for a carrier and then a morse message. This was repeated during a period of at least 1,5 hours. The "message" consisted only of the letter "Z".

Unid Chinese numbers stations

Robin Harwood sent the following update:

"I have now logged the so-called Chinese Lady on two new channels in addition to 5924 kHz at the same time. These are 6448 and 8621. The former is best but is plagued by the Japanese Defence Agency slot machine nearby. 8621 is marginal and is only audible when there is no noise. All are LSB. I speculate that 8621 is NOT in Asia as there are plenty of strong Asian signals close by. Wonder where and who is operating the station. The other night it was interesting. Letters were repeatedly given in computer generated English without phonetics with Asian pronunciation. The same group ("BWX" or "DXW") was repeated. It was very hard to tell which. I don't think it is Taiwan or Beijing."

Thanks for the note, Robin. The transmissions originate from Beijing but it is definitely not the same net as the military stations "Beijingcalling", "Guangzhou calling", etc.

A lengthy log came from Igor who jotted it down: 27 Sep., 1533-1553 UTC on 4650 // 6460 kHz LSB.
