Numbers + Oddities Logs column #01, April 1998

Jascha Ruesseler

Hi all and welcome to the first N&O logs column. The log format will be slightly different from the one used in the WUN-newsletters log section:
FREQ C/S STATION (Enigma code) TIME (+date) MODE (baud) REMARKS (INITIALS)

Example:
10426 unkn LINCOLNSHIRE POACHER (E3) 1540 (13-4-98 day/month/year) USB ongoing msg.(JR)

If you don't know a callsign just ignore this entry. The logs used in this column have been posted to the Spooks and/or WUN mailing lists. If you want to remain anonymous you can send your loggings directly to me (adr. see above) and I include them without revealing your identity. Alternatively, you can send your loggings to Ary. It would help a lot if you would keep to this format whenever posting logs to WUN or Spooks. The logs in this column will be sorted by frequency and all modes are included in the same section. I also added a section of *xtra-logs* including posts which did not contain enough data to make a complete logging.

6868.0 CUBA BORED MAN tx test (starring Ruperta the Alligator Girl) 2010-2129* (3-4-98) tune in to USB+carrier relaying hardwire voice circuit, SP M repeating "QUINTO NEGATIVO, 3617, ESCRIBO FINAL" several times. Also short counts by SP W. At 2014 3617 clg ESCRIBO. 50 clg 3617 at 2017. ESCRIBO and 3617 seemed to be on same tx, while 50 seemed to be on different SSB tx while carrier remained on the whole time (this is typical, actually, for this kind of Cuban operation). Little else to 2029, when tx jumped to 6870.7. 2033 pulled plug, then back on 6868.2 in CW w/ V's, SOS a couple of times, then back to open carrier on 6870.8. Some keyed morse buzzing sound then. 2100 suddenly switched to RTTY 50/500R centered on 6868.1, handkeyed RYRY, then into repeating RYRY tape. 2110 RYs halted and some opchat: "DIME COMO TU ME COPIAS ADT" 2x then "ADT DIME QUIEN POR ESA ADT DIME SI ES GISELL LA BOBA ADT" and "NO ES RUPERTA LA CAIMANA AR" then back into RY stuff. 2118 idles, which then "spun down" to a stop, so using a mechanical terminal evidently. 2121 back into RYRY tape again to 2125 more poorly typed opchat: "DFALAMO Y MISLE Y DYS SONV COMPANEROS" then pulled plug 2129. Xlnt signal. No return links noted on lower HF anywhere. ADT has been mentioned previously, is apparently a hardwire TTY ckt, and presumably has something to do with DAAFAR air defense. (ANUS)

Extra logs

And finally some logs without enough data to make a real log out of it (e.g. missing freq):

Whilst listening to Radio Pyongyang the other evening at 2020 UTC (you sad man), I heard a previously unreported MOSSAD station, with a broadcast that lasted only 3 minutes. HOTEL NOVEMBER CHARLIE-HOTEL was repeated by the usual YL. Last night (2 APR 98) AT 1900 UTC it was noted again with HOTEL NOVEMBER CHARLIE-ZULU, again with a transmission lasting only 3 minutes. It would seem to be like ZWL and OEM i.e. very elusive. Freq was 6575. (SM) R. Pyongyang is on 6576 kHz
