ENIGMA 2000 will not be covering any aspect of Dr David Kelly's tragic death out of respect for him and his family.
The despicable manner in which this poor man has been characterised [by governmental spin] is beyond belief. An in-depth look at this man, his skills, character and personality can be found in Richard Preston's 'The Demon in the Freezer'.
Alec Dakin, born 1912 was educated at Heat School and then Queen's College, Oxford reading Greats. In 1940 he was recruited to work as a cryptographer at Bletchley Park. He was fluent in German and worked in Hut 4. Hut 4 was responsible for translating decrypted German naval signals. Dakin is stated as rapidly identifying signals of particular importance. He was involved with the signal from the Bismark 'Most immediate. Torpedo hit right aft, ship unmanoeuvrable. We fight to the last shell. Long live the Fuehrer.' He was also one of the first people to read the message 'The Fuehrer Adolf Hitler is dead'. After the war Dakin became a schoolmaster, joining the staff at Kingswood School, Bath teaching Classics. Alec Dakin died on 14th June, 2003 aged 91. Mr Dakin's obituary can be read at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,173-740377,00.html
E2k received a mention by Nick Ferrari on LBC 97.3 during a short mention concerning Menwith Hill. After reading an email out stating that UK Nationals do have access to RAF Menwith Hill [the writer admitted having gone bowling there with her brother who works on the base] Mr Ferrari read out another email that gave the enigma group URL. -- thanks!
We recently received an interesting email which read:

The Northern Ireland secretary has reported that an independent report states that rogue security force agents had no involvement with the removal and theft of Special Branch documents from Castleraegh Police Station, Belfast in March 2002.
Newspapers have reported that David Blunkett has stated that he is calling for ID cards to be issued to all in Britain [at a cost around £39 to the recipient]. Whilst they would not need to be routinely carried they could be required to be produced in specific circumstances. Britain's civil liberties have lodged a complaint about this requirement for ID Cards [where do these idiots come from] and the need for biometric data to be included. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,176-736390,00.html
It has been announced that the Director General of MI6 is to retire early. His successor is said to have been recruited from Tony Blair's camp.
A mugger who robbed a diplomat's son was allegedly stabbed to death by the victim's father. The 45 year old Colombian diplomat chased the mugger some distance, into an alley and stabbed him in the chest. A 6" wound is reported as having 'transfixed' the 23 year old mugger's liver.
The mugger had robbed the 21 year old diplomat's son outside Perivale Underground Station in West London. He escaped with minor bruises after losing his credit cards to the thief. When he told his father of the event, son and father went looking for the two assailants rather than informing the police.
The diplomat did not attempt to claim diplomatic immunity although Colombia waived it after Blair raised it with Mr Alvaro Uribe, the Colombian president-elect. The case continued at the Old Bailey eventually ending on 22/07 when the diplomat was cleared of both murder and manslaughter. The mugger's family were not happy with the result and remonstrated outside the courthouse. The accused diplomat had served with Colombian Special Forces and when attacked by the mugger used the mugger's own knife against him.
For the Embassy buffs amongst you the Colombian Ambassador's car VRM is COL 1, whilst the rest are in the series 136Dnnn.
Whilst on the diplomatic run, there are stories circulating about HM Queen's swans being removed, killed and barbequed by refugees. Whether there is any truth on this matter is anyone's guess but it certainly brought back memories of the arrest of a diplomat who, just prior to Christmas one year, had captured a swan, wrung its neck and walked with it to his embassy. When intercepted by uniformed police he claimed diplomatic immunity.
However the matter did not end there. An official complaint was made to the embassy and the offender was later seen being led onto the national airline [of the country he represented] at Heathrow, never to be seen again - Tnx for the memory Jim.
Lloyd Scott of Bartow, Florida sent this interesting piece into Group and has kindly agreed to our using it in this Newsletter. Lloyd will be please to receive your comments.
"Back around 1962-3 I was receiving a numbers station very loud at my home location here in Bartow, Florida. I made an el-cheapo direction finder and triangulated the station. I took a portable SW receiver and proceeded to locate the station. I found it in a wooded area in a neighbouring county. It was contained in a single semi trailer and apparently had one operator.
The trailer had a Georgia tag and the operators car had a California tag. The antenna was two towers and what appeared to be a "curtain" type antenna. One door on the trailer had been left open and several racks of equipment were visible. The operator did not see me.
I took one picture leaving the area and it was published in Popular Communications around 15-20 years ago. Further investigation revealed that the operator would go to a specific gas station in the area and purchase cold drinks. He informed the clerk that he was doing "Radio Active studies" and people should stay away because it was hazardous to come into the area. The antenna was directed due South from Florida. Sounds like Cuban business?? I checked with the power company that serves that area and they had no service provided to the location where the trailer was located.??"

The 28year old female who was accused of passing a secret memo to The Observer newspaper in March 2003 has been dismissed.
The CPS has yet to decide if any charges will be made although a Human Rights specialist has said that it would be better for the Government and for GCHQ if the matter was dropped. [Tnx E].
The newspapers were full of it on 08/07. The Metro claimed that 'War in Iraq was 'shot in the dark' on its front page, stating that 'Defence chiefs had little idea whether Saddam Hussein had WMD's before Britain went to war, or whether he would use them.' On pages 4 and 5 it stated in a timeline how the argument developed.
The Times stated 'Voters losing faith in Blair over Iraq war' on its front page whilst the full dossier report was in detail on pages 10 and 11. Key points of this problem were again stated: Ministers did not mislead Parliament, Reliable intelligence on Iraq is 'limited', Claim that WMD could be deployed in 45 minutes was given undue prominence, Alistair Campbell did not seek to insert claim, No evidence of political meddling, Claims in September document well-founded on basis of intelligence then available, Doubts on intelligence for claims that Iraq tried to buy uranium in Africa, Jury still out on accuracy on British intelligence on WMD, February's dossier 'almost wholly counter-productive', Refusal to let MP's interview intelligence chiefs "a failure of accountability." [ Excerpt taken from The Times 08/07 'Campbell Mistaken but not improper' by David Chater].
Despite the ramifications within Parliament, Number Ten and other places, the ordinary man in the street knows when he is being conned. The headlines from The Daily Mail summed the whole event up nicely, "If Blair and Campbell had been businessmen, the Fraud Office would be knocking on their doors." According to The Times the MP's verdict on the Iraq dossier was 'In the absence of evidence that intelligence personnel complained.. allegations of politically inspired meddling cannot be established.
For the man in the street the Iraqi campaign was something that was hyped up by Bush and Blair and which has resulted in needless deaths on all sides for a war in tne cause of liberation that never was. Jack Profumo, Minister for War stepped down from his position when he lied to the House about his having 'Ladies and Gentlemen' with Christine Keeler [the lucky fellow]. All he did was lie to the House about an extramarital affair with a rather fetching young lady who may, or may not have been sleeping with another lucky chap, Eugene Ivanov, a Russian Diplomat. That was in 1963, when honour existed and when responsibility was accepted.
Tony Blair and his cohorts have apparently misled an entire Nation, sent our forces to war, a few who died at the hands of our enemies and many more at the hands of our so called allies [who we play second fiddle to because Blair is such a pitiful Americaphile]. All this and Blair is still there. The Daily Mail Iraq Dossier [Commentary by Peter Osbourne] stated 'One of the most shocking revelations of the entire report is neither Sir John Scarlett, nor the Head of the Secret Service nor the Chief of Defence Intelligence even bothered to reply when invited to give evidence.' Sums the entire matter up, totally. Better still is the finger pointing at George Tenet [CIA] for apparently allowing a reference to it when it was allowed into Dubya's 'State of the Nation' speech. [Pity Blair doesn't have such a speech -- but then he only has to listen to the banter on a train or in a bar to learn about the state of HIS nation]. MI6 states that it is protocol preventing it from passing details of this evidence on, Robin Cook says it's time for the Government to come clean and publish the extra evidence they claim proves there was a uranium deal. Better than that, Dr Hans Blix stated that Blair has made a fundamental mistake by declaring Saddam Hussein could deploy WMD's in 45 minutes. There is also the other claim that Saddam Hussein had the weapons destroyed before the conflict started. Totally understandable that! After all, we all know drivers who slash the tyres of their cars before going for a drive. Lately claims surfaced suggesting that MI6 was 'duped by forgeries'. It was suggested in Times Page 13 17/07 that the forged document was obtained from a Diplomat in Niger's Rome embassy by an operative of Italy's military intelligence society. [House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, 'The Decision to go to War in Iraq. 107 pages long].
Thanks to a possible lightening strike near Buffalo a power outage deprived a large amount of Americans of electricity. Rumours abounded as to terrorism, including the effects of EMP from a nuclear explosion in the US.
The British papers bored their readers with unnecessary coverage of a common event elsewhere. One photograph showed loads of Americans sleeping in the street - looked like a scene from 'Soylent Green'! [The blackout was naturally the biggest the world has ever seen]!
Loss of power to some parts of London caused the stranding of half a million commuters and loss of power to 250.000 homes.
The blackout was caused by the failure of two 275kV cables. When interviewed on LBC the next day Mayor Ken Livingstone described the event as 'a catastrophic failure' and then added that the British again showed the same resilience and discipline that they had when in the blitz of WW2. [On the 0608 a fellow commuter said, “It's an MI5 conspiracy to give the media something to report other than the way that Blair wormed his way out of the Hutton Enquiry!” It was said in humour, however……].
The Private Eye magazine [No 1084 11 to 24 July 2003] cover carried an excellent jibe. Under the headline 'Blair Defends Integrity' an image of Blair is shown with a speech bubble in which is written, 'I have never told a lie'. From a male behind another speech bubble states, 'Whoops! There's another one'!
The belated fourth episode from the BBC was hailed as being the best but PLondon received a txt message from another e2k member about the pro's and cons of nerve agent VX, its colour and also the use of the Combo Pen auto injector. There were other messages on the subject too.
For the information of the member[s] concerned:
VX: Boiling Point 298°C, Vapour Pressure 0.0007mm Hg at 20°C, Density Vapour [compared to air] 9.2
Liquid 1.008g/ml at 20°C, Volatility 10.5mg/cu.m at 25°C, Appearance Colourless to straw-coloured liquid [not green as Spooks informed us], Odourless. The LD50 is 10mg as stated by the BBC's script, but only for a 70kg man. Futher info can be found from 'We All Fall Down: the Prospect of Biological and Chemical Warfare' (Pelican) by Robin Clarke, Penguin Books, Paperback [29th November, 1969] Jane's Chem-Bio Handbook, 2nd Edition ISBN 0 7106 2571 -5.
Incidentally, atropine is not given directly into the heart, any large area of muscle is suitable, notably that between the knee and buttock. Pralidoxime Chloride, 2-PAMCl, is also a contender. To cheer yourself up read 'Project Dracula' by Allan Scott. Both Fort Detrick and Porton Down get a mention, so you're in for a right royal treat, paralysed with fear perhaps?
Episode 5 was a belter and worth waiting for. The US President was visiting Great Britain, seeing the Queen, bit of sightseeing [and a visit to the Libyan Consulate] and so on. Lots of bad attitude from the Yanks as well as the Brits. The Brits also being harassed by their HR officer [Personnel officer to those of you not party to this lately nonsensical titling]. Christine Dale of the CIA and Tinkering Tom had words about CD's belligerent stirring and chivvying of his staff, "It's our Country. Slightly smaller than Oregon, that's how you describe it in the CIA World Fact Book [and it is!!! Page 518 CIA WFB 2001]. That set the tone for the dialogue of the entire programme. What was better that the Brits had opened a Diplomatic Box from the US and whilst having a root about someone dropped a mug of Earl Grey in the box marring some files. A sub-plot involving some female house officer from a London Hospital who has gone radio-rental and posted 'tart cards' with Tinkering Tom all over them was an unnecessary load of tripe as was the visit by the CIA in response to her threat against the operation to protect the president.
But it didn't stop there - some radio enthusiast was noted as getting hold of the freqs for 'Air Force One' , nothing new there but surprised e2k didn't actually get a mention. Leading to the final scene we get to see Tom's kitchen, not unlike that of Agent Harry Palmer in the 'Ippcress File'. This leads on to a union of Christine Dale and the MI5 man for a meaningful session of 'ladies and gentleman' in Ms Dale's living room. Later Tinkering Tom is told to get rid of the girl, which he does - only to get back together with her after leading an attractive Columbian 'chick' to her death.
Walter Zapp who invented the Minox miniature camera passed away on 17th July aged 97. The Minox used a film a quarter of the size of a standard 35mm film.
Walter Zapp was born in Riga, Latvia.
Khaled Abdel-Latif Dumeisi has been arrested in Chicago on charges of secretly gathering information on Iraqi opposition figures whilst as an agent on Saddam Hussein's intelligence service. The charges were brought as a result of evidence taken from a dossier seized in Baghdad.
British Airways suspended flights to Saudi Arabia because of a security threat apparently being cooked up by agents of al-Qaeda. Saudi forces clashed with gunmen in Riyadh and reports of terror attacks on a British City were made due to 'chatter' heard electronically.
The Nursing Standard [August 13 to 19, vol 17 no 48] ran a piece, featured on the front cover, entitled "Anthrax: forms, symptoms and treatment." A massive and interesting article, it began on page 33 and concluded on page 37.
A newspiece on TV showed a local Crown Court closing due to a 'white powder' being received in the post, but not due to terrorism.
Just to back all this up a British Rice Importer was arrested for apparently attempting to purchase and sell on a Russian made shoulder launched ground to air missile. The claims, reported in the British media as having been made by the FBI, was that the target was Air Force One [Dubya's plane]. Well it would be wouldn't it!
At the same time as all this news was breaking Dr Kelly's thoughts on this WMD's in 45 minutes scam was being investigated in Court 73 down the Strand. Mere coincidence?
A DC3, nicknamed the 'Flying Hut' and bearing Sweden's national symbol of three crowns has been located in 300ft of water east of Gotska Sandon Island, about 80miles from Stockholm.
Whilst Sweden was officially neutral in the Cold War it co-operated with Nato.
The DC3 was equipped with the latest British Surveillance equipment and a crew of eight at the time. It is thought that the bulky plane would be no match for the MiG that shot it bdown when it encroached Soviet airspace. [Tnx E]
The government has expelled a Saudi diplomat in a move that newspapers have linked to allegations that he bribed a London police officer for information on UK residents.
London police declined to give repoprters details of the case [apparently involving current prosecution]. The Times newspaper has named the diplomat as Ali al-Shamarani and described him as an "intelligence officer". The Times stated that over four years, Shamarani had allegedly paid several thousand pounds to a police officer for information about Middle Eastern citizens living in Britain.
On 09/07 a demo was underway outside the Iranian Embassy, Princess Gate, London [famous for the SAS action in 1980 - unsuccessfully copied by other special forces]. Various fliers were being handed out but one made interesting reading. 'This leaflet is to inform you what the facts are and why so many Iranians all around the World are troubled about their country….'
Then followed a short history of Iran and a statement about reasons why Iranians have been immigrating to other countries for safety reasons since the 1979 religious revolution [Ayatolla Khomeini]. Then followed a list of harrowing reasons, including images of torture. A list of things that all Iranians want was shown. The most interesting being:
'Track down the Spy's placed in UK by the religious regime of Iran'.
What is the organisation called? There were three URLs on the leaflet, but no contact details.
Whilst loitering and generally rubbernecking it was noticed that a rather large satellite dish had appeared on the roof of 18 Princess Gate and upon examination the next day it was noticed that a CCTV camera was mounted on the roof of the Iranian embassy. It can probably get a very good view on the other side of Kensington Gore, across Coalbrookdale gate and beyond. It could certainly see, in detail, those demonstrating on the north kerb of the eastbound carriageway of the Gore.
A KGB officer gave the CIA what are now known as the 'Rosewood' files. It is said that over 200000 names are recorded, of which 1200 could be spies in West Germany and 40000 agents who worked in the former East Germany.
The way in which the CIA obtained them is described as one of the Cold War's last great intelligence coups. It is reported that the declassification of these files is set to blow the covers of 50000 agents who worked for the Stasi; the Rosewood files containing the true identities of those mentioned in other files in coded form.
Samsung that makes one of the hi-tech mobile camera phones has banned staff from taking them to work to protect company secrets. The makers boast how easily the tiny units can be used to circulate pictures around the world and now they have fallen prey to their own ingenuity!
The CIA has placed adverts for Locksmiths to 'familiarise non-technical people with technical capabilities, do hands-on work and travel worldwide'.
Also. 'Knowledge of electronic and manual safe lock servicing , electricity and alarms is ideal. Knowing how to operate machinery to fabricate lock parts [bet that means making keys] and tools will be beneficial.'
'There is a wide range of requirements that the agency would have for which individuals with locksmith capabilities could be utilised' a CIA spokesperson stated, adding, 'but what they do and how they do it is not something we're going to be able to discuss publicly.' [Tnx E].
'A wartime codebreaker who lived alone in Edinburgh has astonished friends and neighbours by leaving £1.5million. Marjorie Kennedy, 87, a spinster, died in November. During the Second World War she was a Wren at Bletchley Park.'
[The above appeared in The Times newspaper, page 4 col 8 Friday August 29 2003].
The human rights group, Liberty condemned the use of Electronic Surveillance after it had learnt of a plan by M&S and Tesco to use radio frequency identification microchips to track their garments as they leave the stores. The idea is to deter shoplifters but the Director of 'Liberty' says the idea infringes human rights. [Where do these people come from]?
JoA had an interesting tour around Cambridge and ended up in "The Orchard" at Grantchester. Many famous people have taken tea there, including: Alan Turing, Burgess, Maclean, Philby, Blunt, Cairncross, Blake, & Fuchs. The wooden hut has stood for 100 years, and one can have tea under the apple trees in deck chairs, as has been the custom for those 100 years. The list of visitors includes about seventy.
Next to "The Orchard" over the hedge, is "The Old Vicarage," now owned by Mary & Jeffrey Archer. [Tnx JoA].
